(Shock Records) The Diary of Jimmy Barnes’ Daughter Apparently, it seems that EJ Barnes has avoided her father’s `signature scream method. Luckily so, as EJ is the striking opposite to her father. In place of the characteristic sound of tearing vocal chords lay smoky pop vocals amongst a vast range of instruments. As heard on title track There and Back, instruments manically battle and interweave, while on other songs such as Fire Light, straight forward songs shine with meticulous artistry and creativity. While relatively pleasant, creative and equally well produced the album feels as if it’s continually reaching for a little more. It’s as if the album never really takes off or has that catchy appeal you come to expect with this kind of music. It’s not that the creative song development goes no-where, actually, it’s quite appreciated. It’s just that it would have been nice to walk away with at least one melody stuck in my head.
