JIM LINDBERG frontman for Southern Californian punk icons PENNYWISE is a little more chilled these days. When not fronting the melodic Hermosa Beach quartet, Lindberg is drinking wine and watching DVDs with his family. Linberg speaks to BIANCA VALENTINO.
“It was one of those movies where the little girl gets a horse and it gets injured but then it wins the race and everyone's happy,” he informs of last nights viewing. “Isn't there about thirty movies with that same premise?” Lindberg laughs.
Pennywise have been enjoying a little downtime after a spot of touring for latest album, The Fuse. “We're headed out to do some more touring down in your part and in Japan and then we've got some stuff in Europe. In the meantime we've just been taking some time off and getting our lives in order and now we're ready to get back out on the road,” he explains. Earlier in February of this year the band were scheduled to play a string of Australian shows which were canceled leaving fans wondering what happened? “It was a strange situation,” Lindberg sheds some light, “We were out on the road when we were scheduling the tour and there were some issues regarding our touring we were trying to work out. The tour got booked before we had a chance to work out some of those issues, it was one of those things, we did have some conflict going on but we were able to smooth everything over and reschedule the shows.” The cancellation of shows sent the rumour mill into over drive, had Pennywise called it quits? “That's the trouble with the internet these days,” he starts. “If you postpone a tour, someone just has to say one thing and it becomes fact and then all of a sudden they're reporting it everywhere. Literally within a couple of days they were saying that on our local radio station. I was like 'Geez that's news to me!' I really think it says something about our society these days about how that can happen, people can say anything they want just on a message board somewhere and people will take it as fact – it's kind of crazy.” Lindberg is the first to admit that he has thought of, at times, calling it quits. “When you go through difficult times, especially a band like us who's been around for so long, there are times especially with having a family where you wonder 'How long can I keep doing this?' As long as we have fans out there that want to see us play and that are buying our records we'll put out music. It does get hard though after fifteen/twenty years for four guys to agree on every single part of the band. After a while it gets harder and harder to compromise. It's just up to us to decide how much everyone is willing to sacrifice to be in the band. I know that that is a lot for all of us.” Pennywise play July 12 at the Coolangatta Hotel and July 13 at the Arena. The Fuse out now on Epitaph/Shock Records.
