The Zoo - Thu Jan 3
The pelting rain and cold weather, apart from being a sign of an impending apocalypse, manages to keep the early crowd to a minimum. Some would say it put a ‘dampener’ on the night. But not I, that would be lame. Dot.AY delivers drum & bass that sounds like making violent love to a Commodore 64. I loved it for bringing me back to my youthful days filled with Zelda and Excitebike. Joel Saunders provided another eardrum assault, but this time it’s in the form of a band that specializes in making Frankenstein monsters out of pop songs, with victims including Nelly Furtado and The Supremes. Don’t believe me? Well screw you, I have the pen and paper. One man hunkered around a laptop mashing up samples may not seem like an entertaining night, which is probably why Girl Talk (aka Pittsburgh-born Greg Gillis) quickly gets as many manic kids onstage as bouncers will allow. Dexy’s Midnight Runners glide past Jay-Z and The Smashing Pumpkins without shame or irony, just a talent for creating the ultimate party vibe. This isn’t Guilty Pleasures or some sort of grand gesture, Girl Talk just knows to make the bodies move. It would appear that Brisbane’s best New Years party came a few days late, and it kinda just occurred to me that this has all been one big post-modern experiment. Me likey. MITCH ALEXANDER
