ImageTHE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS singer and writer MAT MCHUGH speaks with a cheeky MORGAN MAGUIRE about their recent American tour, their current Australian tour and the band’s groupie encounters…

So Mat - tell me what’s been happening for the band over the past few months?

Yeah, been in America touring. We got back two months ago and I got back to Sydney for a week and then went to Byron Bay and rented a place for six weeks and wrote some songs cause for the last four Australian summers we were in American winters. I got back to Sydney and it started to get a bit cold, so I went there and took in the sun and the waves and stuff, and got some stuff done.

How were the American crowds?

It’s going really great there now – the last few tours we have done were pretty decent- sized support tours with 2000 seat venues – and this tour was our own headline tour and it was really good and a lot of them sold out. And now we are doing an Australian tour.

Have you had any groupies?

Er, um, not…no, er, you mean having sex with girls?

Oh yeah!!!

Hmm, we have had people that have said some weird things I guess…

What is the weirdest thing that has been said to you?

I don’t know there’s lots – well we get propositioned a lot I guess – er, um, well yeah, just the way people go about it – there are some people that really put themselves out there and let it known that they are willing to do whatever – but I don’t think it’s a really attractive quality in a person to tell you the truth.

Does the band have a groupie policy?

No we kinda don’t have a policy for anything to tell you the truth – it’s just kind of not a really healthy thing to do, do you think? I just can’t imagine being with someone – kissing them, let alone having sex with them, with the complete unbalance of power and having them thinking you are someone you are not – you know you are just a human being, but they think you are someone you are not…

Like a rock god?!

(Ignoring last comment)  Art is censored you know, and whatever you do in songs or whatever you work hard to make, the music reflects what you are feeling, but that doesn’t always reflect 100% of you all the time. You know some days you are grumpy, some days you are a pain in the arse, and other days you have body odour and bad hair so it’s like…unrealistic, and I don’t think it’s healthy and not healthy for anyone else involved. I guess that’s kind of an un-rock & roll thing to say, but I just don’t think it is right for me or them – so I guess that mean I do have a groupie policy!

The Beautiful Girls play at The Tivoli on July 7.
