Chris Cornell, meet Ned Collette Electric/acoustic one-twos are not new, but not often is there such a disparity between song-writing styles. At first listen it seems the early ‘90s have left their definitive spray-painted mark on the Jimmi Carr Band. Hailing from the Blue Mountains, a region better known for its scenic rock formations than its formative rock scene, Carr and co. spend the majority of the first disc parading as funked-up, pissed-off grunge revivalists, blending together Flea-bitten basslines and yet-to-set choruses scraped off Seattle sidewalks. By and large, it works: Chow Down and Simplify scuffle over thawed-out Sub Pop offcuts before White People brings them to heel with a whistled melody. The accompanying acoustic CD strips off the flannel shirts in what, I feel, is a more coherent display of Carr’s talents; buoyant jangler Love The Fear Of Life is the clear winner here, evoking the ghosts of Candle Records with marked aplomb.
