MUSIC BUSINESS COURSE ON TRACK WITH RECORD COMPANY VENTURE
Wednesday, 23 January 2008
The Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE Music Business course, starting in early February, is up for an exciting year with new practical projects for the students to get their teeth into.
In November last year the 2007 graduating students launched Mechano Entertainment, a vehicle they had created to enable future students to gain real life industry experience.
Mechano Entertainment will become the vehicle that acts as entrepreneurs for music and acting student’s events, markets those events and manages the performers and crew on the night.
The students will also run a digital record company which will become part of the learning and assessment experience for both music and music business students.
Business students will learn how to appraise musical acts and their repertoire, sign them to record deals and assist in the preparation of recordings suitable for distribution. They will choose a digital aggregator suitable for the product and market the act and the recordings. Everything that a real life manager or A&R manager would do.
By making these exciting changes to the program lead teacher Andrea Smith hopes that students will be easily able to find a place in the exciting QLD and world music industry. “There have been a lot of changes in the industry over the past few years and it continues to change rapidly.” Andrea said “By working on ways to make my course more practical I feel the students will more easily understand and be able to cope with the industry as it is today and the changes that are no doubt going to come in the future”.
Andrea has had many students successfully translate their learning into accomplishments in the music industry including Bird Jensen of Phoenix Movement Records, Tracey Newman, station manager of 4ZzZ, Dom Hooghuis of band Chasing Gravity and roots musician 8Ball Aitken.
“Studying music business with Andrea Smith has helped me turn my music into a fulltime profession. I used to be a banana picker, but using the skills that I learnt at TAFE, I have now forged a career as an international recording and performing musician playing across Australia, Japan, USA and the Pacific. I really recommend young people to take their music to the next level through education” says 8Ball.
Bird Jensen adds “Working with Andrea Smith has given us the cutting edge in all aspects of our professional image development. She has the practical music industry experience which is so necessary in marketing within the entertainment business. I encourage anyone who is serious about their career to follow up on the professional opportunities that Andrea offers. She is a multi-skilled lateral thinker with top technical abilities, as well as abundant creativity. We'd be lost without her."
For a great practical, information rich course that is a must if you are serious about a career in the music industry you can’t go past Music Business at Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE.
