(Independent) Asunder but not unambitious Torn Asunder’s debut EP The Unleashing merges into two distinct halves. The first is a journey of the post-thrash metal variety through halting riffs, gritty bass lines, and gloriously moody drumming. The lure in tracks like Alive Again is an experimental song structure, where changes in pace and intensity build each song to a patiently sought breakdown. In fact, each effort is constructed with such careful professionalism and attention to bridges, that I’m tempted to overlook track 4. One’s Oath Failed is strangely underdeveloped, when compared to the melodic ideals that make the rest of this EP work. Post-tracks absolve with streams of hardcore-trained vocals, which sing just as powerfully as they punish, harmonising productively in their coarse state. Furthermore, bent guitar notes and tremolo picking flourish the bittersweet ends of phrases. The Unleashing is crouching to ensnare any listener with a taste for non-formulaic structure as catering to their sensory palette. ASH JONES
