(54 Records/Creative Vibes) Bombastic synth-pop debut from UK trio Eskimo Disco are making waves with their stadium synth-pop, produced on this debut album by Howard Gray of Apollo 440 (and knob twiddler for the likes of U2 and The Cure). They are clearly students of classic synth hooks, the songs bursting with retro-electro pop flourishes reminiscent of Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys. The beats are solid, stabbing and unsubtle, with the vocals a pouting hybrid of Simon Le Bon and Robert Smith. The result is very entertaining, if somewhat overbaked. There is such an effort to make these songs sound as big and block-rocking as possible, that the songs can sound a tad claustrophobic. That said, the very stature of these majestic synth-pop anthems, seemingly carved from moon granite, may well incite the masses as simulated in spirited opener Live On Mars Part 1. The synthetic widdly-widdly of Air Guitar and the robotic sexiness of What Is Woman? also provide highlights. *** MATT THROWER
