(CUUC) Spain, the rock capital? Spain’s After Prozac are a group reaching for grandiose ambitions within a style of music that attempts to combine the positive values of alternative rock, punk and perhaps even funk. Like many acts in these genres, the guitars are meant be huge and they’re supposed to soar; similarly the drums are supposed to be a pulsating heartbeat lying beneath it all. Unfortunately, the moment the album kicks in with two dueling guitars, all the intended bombast is already lost, mainly due to tinny treble-heavy production. Although, even with increased production values, this would still be far and away from the alternative rock masterpiece it desires to be. For example, After Prozac transform from a gawky J.D. Fortune-era INXS to a band delivering an unmeasured grunge pastiche in seconds. It’s not that this album is terribly awful, it’s just that you probably wouldn’t come back to it too often.
