(Private Practice) If this was 1992, these boys would be omnipresent Peregrine cite Elvis Costello and Neil Finn/Crowded House as major influences, and fairly quickly you realise how accurate a comparison this is. The Good Ship jumps out the gates like a joyful sea-shanty, aided by punchy drums and the most modest of vocal harmonies. Elsewhere, Elizabeth sounds like one of those extremely catchy songs with perfect choruses that have now sadly been relegated to bad karaoke nights and Triple M playlists. I’m a sucker for a solid dose of pop-rock – regardless of the endless stream of bad Joy Division cover bands running around these days – so there’s an obvious attraction here. Where’s the fun in that stuff anyway? Yeah the kids dance, but they’re not enjoying it, just falling prey to primal urges of the bass drum. Peregrine seem like the rare type of band that don’t take themselves too seriously, even on the slightly moodier numbers like Unnecessary Noise. Keep plugging away, lads, Ian Curtis can only be cool for so long. MITCH ALEXANDER
