(Independent) Local troubadour’s album no #4 Over ten years have passed since local Paddy Dempsey’s first release back in 1994. Now there is Home, a somewhat eclectic group of tracks in varying levels of quality. It veers haphazardly between the terrible and the quite good. The title track is one of the stronger cuts here, some subtly incorporated strings adding a necessary extra dimension. There’s a few different floating ideas around, the sample and beat-based Moby-esque Surf providing a change of pace. The song itself isn’t very good but at least he’s showing a bit of versatility. Then again, the eurotrash pop of Amerika is outright dreadful, the repeated echoes of We’re turning into / America are devastatingly cheesy. The Great Chameleon and Dancing In Fiery Flames return the record to competent folkie status, the latter a charming duet with Alison St Ledger. This one is a rocky road to traverse, though a gem or two lie amongst the grey stones. MICHAEL PINCOTT
