Punxie is officially in the running for Mayor of Brisbane, her nomination forms being delivered and approved by the Electoral Commission earlier today. [BRISBANE: 10th February 2008] Nearly 1,500 people have joined in their support of the local musician and extroverted feminist comedian, who is running under her ‘real’ name Louise Day.
“I am running to improve the lives of every person in Brisbane,” says Punxie. “We need realistic solutions to crime, drugs, and gangs so that our streets are safer and our neighborhoods are more secure.” Punxie officially kicked off her campaign for Mayor of Brisbane at The Clarence Corner on Friday 8th. The casual event was held from 9:00 PM until 1AM and also featured local bands The Ne’erdowells and The Drunken Angels.
“After my songs were released on MySpace, many longtime residents of Brisbane saw what I was about and the political nature of punk music and decided to join me in my pursuit to make Brisbane better,” says Punxie. “As with a lot of people in Brisbane, they understand that it’s time to look ahead. They believe that my vision for the future is real and that it offers hope to create a beautiful modern city with facilities for youth through to seniors.”
Nikki Kirkigaard, one local supporter says “Punxie really took her time talking to people to find out what our concerns were and going suburb to suburb - she is a new generation of politician - one that blends compassion with common sense.” “I’m here for Punxie 110 percent,” adds Nikki, 40, who has lived her entire life in Brisbane and is currently raising her 15 year old daughter here.
Another longtime Brisbane resident, Jordan Bates, admits that he loves Punxie “but hates her music”. He says “Punxie has no self-interest. She is not a public servant, not a politician. Punxie is just an incredibly smart, very courageous lady with an uncanny ability to sense unfairness. She absolutely has the ability to run Brisbane well.”
Greg Lawler, 45, a local public servant, concurs. “I believe that Brisbane needs change, and it would be an amazing thing to have Punxie as Mayor. "I hope people can look past the punk rock exterior she projects to see the vision she has, because there isn’t any doubt in my mind that Brisbane would be a much better place in four years if she is elected.”
The campaign kickoff began with young Brisbane band The Drunken Angels performing while guests partook of fortune cookies with special Lunar New Year messages for voters. “Vote for Punxie and many wonderful things will come to you,” one cookie read, and from all indications, they just might.
