Psychedelic melodies from outer space

The Stevenson Ranch Davidians could easily be a great British pop group from dreary Manchester; instead they’re a great US pop group from sunny California. Their latest album Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Song is a collection of lush, dark, dreamy pop that steers clear of kitsch ‘60s bubblegum traps by incorporating a dark element and creating a sense of night on each track including Getting By and No Tomorrow. The vocals are delivered in a soft drawl that recalls Richard Ashcroft when The Verve were at their best. The music swirls with echoing guitar and organ tones that fill the background and basslines that come in waves. When combined it creates a thick fog that hovers in your mind. This recording is a journey, whether in outer space or back on terra firma, The Stevenson Ranch Davidians are a psychedelic trip that seems dutiful to a certain sound, but never once seems lifeless.
