ImageSINGLE OF THE WEEK

KRISTY LONDON & THE OTHER HALVES – Love Will Remain EP

(Independent)

After a busy 18 months of playing live shows and refining their songs, Kristy London & The Other Halves have openings for fans of the singer-songwriter genre on offer. If you have experience in getting your heart broken, and a range of other emotions, this could be the band for you! With a range of five mid-tempo songs, from the slight and pretty You Said, all the way through to the rockier Obvious, the ideal prospective fans of this EP will have a broad appreciation of guitar pop pathos, preferably with a demonstrated love of artists such as Missy Higgins and New Buffalo. Located conveniently in Brisbane, a range of opportunities to advance your love of this band will be made available, with live dates approaching and increased airplay on community and youth broadcasters, reflecting the high quality of production. Given this is only London and associates’ second EP, this is an amazing entry level chance to become a fan of a growing band, sure to increase your credibility for spotting talent early well into the future. Heartbreak has never felt so good!

ImageSILVER CITY HIGHWAY – Everything Is Breaking

(Independent)

Due to a continued increased interest in darkly intense faux-country bands, Silver City Highway is seeking fans for their take on this distinctly Australian classic sound. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the fandom of a thriving genre, with recent successes from contemporaries like The Drones, Skipping Girl Vinegar, Gentle Ben & His Sensitive Side, The Devastations and even the Bad Seeds. If spooky emotive rock that sounds like angry thunder galloping rapidly across a blackened country sky is what you’re after in a band, Silver City Highway is the place to get it! As a fan of this band, you will start on a relatively small amount, with just this one-track single, but you can look forward to expanding your portfolio rapidly, with a debut album arriving in the next few weeks. Positions exist for both Full Time fans and Part Time fans, splitting your fan time between Silver City Highway and other bands containing SCH members, including Redfish Bluegrass Band and the excellent Subaudible Hum. Benefits include production from Aaron Cupples (Dan Kelly, The Drones), a great new source of country-and-western-strength fucked-up-family lyrics and an overwhelming feeling that you’ve been out to an intimidatingly creepy ghost town without leaving your seat.

ImageTHE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS – Under A Southern Sky

(Die!Boredom / MGM)

Previous fan positions with this band have focused on The Beautiful Girls’ recent decision to provide day-to-day variety amongst their output – witness the groovy rock vibe on last year’s I Thought About You. However, this single is a message to the group’s traditional fans who might have drifted away when they tried something new – ‘Hey guys, we’re still here! And guess what – we sound EXACTLY like we used to!’ Rootsy with a touch of reggae-rock, The Beautiful Girls are looking to re-recruit people with experience in their previous two albums. If you have a love of experimental music, shoes or not going to festivals, then this is not the band for you! To compensate for the time their sound-broadening might have caused you to spend apart, The Beautiful Girls are offering a song so Aussie, so beachy, even Xavier Rudd fans will be wondering what they’ve been listening to. Under A Southern Sky is all about going to the beach and cricket on the tele, and featuring guitars and didgeridoos, is essentially an update of Icehouse’s Great Southern Land. If you have been searching for a band to be a fan of ever since The Beautiful Girls sounded like someone with more than one thing to say, this will be your great opportunity!

ImageSCRIBE feat. TYRA HAMMOND – Say It Again

(Dirty / Warner)

Are you sick of your current Top 40 R&B hits sounding more like they’re extended ads for their ringtones than actual songs? Are you getting the irrits with laughable pretenders like Chris Brown and Sean Kingston, finding it hard to even remember their tunes? It sounds like you’re looking for a reasonable ‘urban’ act to be a fan of! New Zealand’s most flavoursome MC, Scribe has fantastic opportunities for fans of late ‘60s funk-soul to join his support base, starting with his new single Say It Again. In becoming a fan of Scribe’s, you will enjoy features like:
· Diva-like vocals of his cousin Tyra Hammond;
· A truly fresh take on the classic soul sound, similar to last year’s Say What You Feel triumph by Katalyst;
· Fast-paced rapping which works effectively for its lyrical content if you want to listen closely, or as a smooth background noise to the horns and drums if you want to tune out; and
· Opportunities for repeated listens on Triple J, given that this has been on high rotation for weeks already.

Scribe’s rhymes are competitive, well above the industry standard. Now is the time to take advantage of the winning sound only an urban leader like Scribe can provide! Register your interest in becoming a Scribe fan at your local record store, or on line at whichever site you download your shit from.

ImageCOG – Bird Of Feather

(Difrnt Music / Universal)

While Cog do have a new promotional single available, it’s difficult to know whether they have any vacancies for fans left. Already boasting a sizeable fanbase, with numbers to make most faces in the prog-conceptual-metal scene go agog, this group proudly has very low fan turnover. In an industry (popular music) as a whole known for its short fan tenures and an average of 3-6 month enthusiasm contracts, Cog has defied the statistics, employing an effective loyalty incentive scheme. Essentially, this is a band that gives their fans what they want. Challenging the status quo, overuse of metaphors, and epic gothic-metal that reverberates like it was recorded in a giant chamber? It’s all here, but then through their albums and EPs, it always has been, and anybody attracted by these deeply po-faced conditions has likely already clocked on with Cog. Nonetheless, Bird Of Feather will confirm to existing Cogsters that they are on a winner, ensuring envious fan stability.
