The Troubador - Fri Feb 29 With the headliner sitting up front to see how Brisbane does glitch-electro, Dot.AY (born Alex Yabsley) bounces through unrelenting beats and video game effects like a man playing the greatest Donkey Kong round of his life. Hunkered over a pair of modified Gameboys, children’s toys and yes, even a Guitar Hero guitar, his finale of Know Your Enemy seems like the perfect amalgamation of male adolescent pastimes. Things seen during Joel Saunders’ set that may leave an indelible mark on my brain: a man dancing with a stuffed animal strapped to his head, a five piece band creating a wall of noise heretofore unseen in the comforting surrounds of The Troubadour and a small, bearded primary school teacher that turns Rihanna’s Umbrella (or is it officially um-ber-ell-a now?) into an experimental rock opus. Dan Deacon certainly won’t be winning any beauty prizes (with large glasses, shorts and tucked in t-shirt emphasizing his slight gut), but his party-licious electro is more impressive as he explores the boundaries of crowd participation. Dance-offs, dispensing strobe lights to audience members and distributing lyrics for the epic hypnotic trance of Wham City shows a man committed to creating a musical experience that is both unique and on a group level. A highlight of an already massive week of music in Brisbane. MITCH ALEXANDER
