A wet night in Brisbane can’t dampen the spirits of all those who turned out to see two of Australia’s finest; Lior being supported by Abby Dobson.
Dobson warms the room instantly with her engaging performance. Sitting centre stage strumming her guitar she delights fans with new songs the highlight resting with her evocative rendition of Even When You’re Sleeping, her voice cutting, and distinctive. Dobson has been quiet of late but hopefully this is just a taste of more to come.
Lior steps upon the stage to the applause of adoring fans. Opening with Heal Me, his voice is strong and smooth like velvet, as he is backed by not only his band but also the Tailem Quartet lending a very orchestral feel to the music. Lior’s voice, very obviously influenced by his Middle Eastern roots, is complimented perfectly by violins and a cello producing often at times, a very haunting set.
With a commanding stage presence the audiences can’t help but be drawn into his show, hanging off every lyric.
The surprise of the evening comes when he introduces one Katie Noonan, who sings in place of Sia on Lior’s latest release I’ll Forget You. Their voices combined are exceptional - but unfortunately it only lasts for one song.
Lior’s willingness to interact and tell stories makes this a very personal performance. Covering Nick Drake in the final minutes his performance tonight exudes melody, power, and absolute beauty; the evidence of a quality musician, and one not to miss the next time he heads up this way.
