1. Looking On The South Side: It turns out there is a world south of New Farm, and it’s peppered with excellent little places to eat, like organic supermarket/café Planet Matterz at Morningside. Their breakfasts are packed with brioche, smoked salmon and quark and the coffee is great … plus there’s no stupid line outside on Sunday morning. 684 Wynnum Rd, Morningside. Get the train to Morningside station and it’s a ten-minute walk up the road.
2. Frankly, My Dear, I Do Give A Damn: More props to the awesome folk at Lofly Hanger and Room 40, who keep the ‘gig’ in ‘gigalicious’. This weekend, the tunes come from the electrifying Xiu Xiu, Crayon Fields and Guy Blackman at the Powerhouse’s Frankly! It’s A Pop Music Festival. Lofly gave away a double pass last week so if you want to head along it’s a $49 / $39 ticket. The gig is this Saturday Sep 4. www.brisbanepowerhouse.org for more info.
3. Burnt Earth: If you’re heading to the Powerhouse anytime soon, don’t forget to have a look at Edward Burtynsky’s photographic exhibition of Australian Minescapes, which show eagle-eye views of the landscape altered by industry. Burtynysky’s works have been slammed on walls from Paris to Brooklyn to China, and they’re in Brisbane until Sep 25.
4. Culture / Jammed: My friend Sebastian has pointed the way to the Feel Some Think blog at blogspot. The Sydney-based blogger changes street signs and photographs the quirks they find in the urban world. It’s pretty cute. www.feelsomethink.blogspot.com.
5. Take Me To… Don’t forget Riverfire is on this weekend, meaning you will not be able to move anywhere for a couple of hours on Saturday night. The fireworks are from 7pm – 7:30pm and the BCC has issued an iPhone app detailing vantage points and bridge closures etc. Riverfire heralds the opening of The Brisbane Festival; I’ll get back with my picks of the program next week. www.brisbanefestival.com
