I’m surprised walking into Family tonight; there’s no real special lighting or production that I can see to separate tonight’s Elements Of Life tour from any normal night at Family. But there’s a little merch stand selling Tiësto gear, including $120 hoodies, so we must be in the right place. As for the man himself, nobody seems to have any idea Tiësto is going to show – initial reports that he was due to start at 10.30pm were proven incorrect as Tydi comes on to continue a smooth and progressive warm up from Baby Gee. Then, just after midnight, Tiësto appears and quite promptly makes us all realise how good we’ve got it in our own backyard by fluffing a mix that – for a superstar DJ – shouldn’t be hard to make. The crowd isn’t minding, although a lot of them are in a state where they can’t separate the difference; whether it’s the amount of drinks they’ve consumed, or because the place is so crowded that everyone is concentrating more on not falling over. Tiësto settles into a nice groove and all the big hits are dropped – Lethal Industry, Traffic, Dance 4 Life, Adagio For Strings – but for each punter loving the show, there are another two spending the night praying for more room.
