ImageSCOTT HARMS puts a few questions to touring DJ JAMIE STEVENS, founding member of ARIA Award-winning dance act Infusion, and co-label manager of new imprint Dieb Audio.

SCOTT HARMS: So how did the whole idea to form Dieb happen?

JAMIE STEVENS: I was running a small label for vinyl releases of Infusion material plus a handful of tunes that I licensed, but it ended up way too much work for me alone. One day I spoke with my mate Stel (who lives in Greece and I met through Audiotherapy) and we got to chatting about the music we REALLY wanted to release and promote. It made sense to combine forces, really. John Dalagelis is the other guy involved in this label. The first release is my solo tune called Keep Her Space, and that has remixes from Smith & Selway and Onionz. Both vinyl and digital versions will be coming out early May. It’s all really exciting given the early feedback we’ve had.

SCOTT HARMS: Your remix of Solead’s Giddy Down made John Digweed’s Transitions 3 compilation – do you have plans to further your solo production?

JAMIE STEVENS: Yeh, I was pretty excited about that to say the least! I also have a remix I did (Mineral Drive by Spector) and a remix of my own tune (Keep Her Space – Smith & Selway’s Control Mix) on Transitions 4, which is great too. Solo productions are really fun for me because I feel there is a sound I can let go and explore whereas with Infusion it’s all very much a team effort. Obviously my commitment to Infusion is always my priority, but I find that occasional forays into the strictly dancefloor mentality of my solo work is very cathartic!

SCOTT HARMS: You’ll be performing a solo set at Logic; do you think people will expect that Infusion sound to come through? If so, do you intend to reset those people’s expectations at the door?

JAMIE STEVENS: I think it’s natural for people to expect an Infusion-esque element in the music that I DJ and that is certainly true to some extent, but obviously the big difference is that Infusion is a live act, performing our music as a group, and well, I’m DJing mostly other peoples music albeit with my own edits and mixes. It’s great to create an evening of sound by using other people’s music for a change! What can people expect? Well, I adore my kick-ass bass lines, the trippy atmospheres, rolling percussion and ‘phwoar’-inducing tunes in general. Dirty, fun, deep crazy, sexy ... There is a lot of music from all over the place that really does it for me, so I enjoy piecing it all together when I DJ.

SCOTT HARMS: Can you spill the beans on the status and direction of the new Infusion album? It must be close!

JAMIE STEVENS: We are stupidly close, yes. And we’re all super proud of what we’ve come up with, in all honesty! We are really excited about it, but you’ll just have to wait a little longer – I’m sure all will be revealed when we do an Infusion interview! Ha ha!

SCOTT HARMS: It’s a bit cheesy but I’m dying to know – where in your house do you keep the ARIAs?

JAMIE STEVENS: Well, I gave my Aria for Girls Can Be Cruel to our manager because she dedicated so much time and energy into our career, and I gave the one for the Six Feet album to my Mum and Dad for very obvious reasons. I know Mum and Dad display it above the TV back at home in Wollongong.

Logic & Subtract present JAMIE STEVENS at BarSoma on Friday May 9, supported by BPM, Rikki Newton, Mike Redfern and Fergus Alexander. Check out Dieb Audio releases at www.myspace.com/diebaudio
