Giving black women a role model (lets face it, in 1992 who really wanted to be Whitney Houston?) Mary J Blige (pictured) opened the gates for hip hop soul artists to do their thing without having to appropriate themselves with the sleek consumer ‘90s market or being a ho’. Widely regarded as the queen of hip hop soul – Blige debuts in Australia in June, playing the Brisbane Entertainment Centre Saturday Jun 14. Tickets hit Ticketek Friday.
