BASIC SHAPE – Boat Without A Sail PDF Print E-mail

Appropriately-titled Melbournians release ‘highly-anticipated’ debut.

Boat Without A Sail is apparently the culmination of three years of recording, co-produced by the band and Craig Pilkington (previously responsible for The Lucksmiths and The Guild League). Three years? Is this some sort of indie-pop Chinese Democracy? I say it’s appropriately titled because this is, well, your pretty basic indie-folk stuff. Pretty harmonies, well-produced with a mix of acoustic rhythms and electric guitar lead lines; you can’t fault it but you know this kind of output is dime-a-dozen these days. First championed by Alex Lloyd or Eskimo Joe once they started taking themselves too seriously, slow waltz-styled tunes with introspective and contemplative lyrics about heartache and whatnot can only go so far. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this on multiple repeat, but at the same time I have no desire to jam a fork into my eardrums after hearing it. You’d be surprised how many times this happens in a week.

hmmm.... I heard them interviewed and playing live on the ABC the other night and thought I'd buy the album. I really liked it... I agree that it's mind blowing but, as someone who listens to alot of that genre, I thought it was great...
