(Sony BMG)
Bland collection of trendy songs, will appeal to Corey fans
Call me old-fashioned, but I always thought the soundtrack was supposed to compliment the story, more than make for a good CD compilation. This just shows how much I’m losing touch, because obviously a good modern soundtrack should resemble the last dozen blog posts on Gorilla vs. Bear. Not to say that the 21 soundtrack isn’t a good listen, it actually makes for quite the good little superficial-life-in-the-fast-lane mix – there’s Soulwax remixing The Rolling Stones! – but every song is more or less interchangeable, and exists within the context a montage scene of young wide-eyed protagonists cruising down the Strip with the top down. I felt like I was in an episode of CSI: Paul Rankin, and at any moment my life would shift into liquid slow-mo, or suddenly objects of interest would be presented to me way too closely. And just like CSI, with every second screaming for attention, the whole assumes a rather monotonous hum of beats, synth lines and inconsequential vocal samples. There’s all the substance here of an Ocean’s 11 montage, so, if you happen to be heading to Vegas and find your convertible has an empty CD player, or if you lead a frivolous life on the Gold Coast, this may be worth picking up.
