OK, so you wanna go veggo. Your friends keep telling you about how they saw a goat get skinned alive, how the chicken their friend bought had a huge wad of yellow throbbing gristle protruding from under its left wing. That, or you just want to have a meat-free meal once in a while. Or even if you’re well versed in the art of eating meat free, SARAH J discovers  nine of Brisbane’s finest restaurants that are either completely vegetarian or offer a great range of "vegetarian alternatives”.

KUAN YIN

198 Wickham St Fortitude Valley

Kuan Yin is a favourite amongst vegetarians and vegans as it offers a great range of completely vegan mock meat. The little nuggets of goodness fill you to the brim and you wont be hungry for days. Well, maybe a few good hours. They offer mock chicken, pork, fish, and beef. All meals are accompanied by a solid serve of vegetables and rice. The bubble teas are also amazing. Awesome service.

Meals cost around $7-8, drinks $3-4.

CIT WOK

Elizabeth Arcade, Brisbane City

Located in one of the most concentrated strips of Asian restaurants in Brisbane, you may find it hard to actually differentiate City Wok from all the others (it’s the one right up the end on the Charlotte Street side). They offer a whole menu of Vegetarian meals including a lot of Malaysian and Singaporean type food. They have one of the best Laksa’s in Brisbane, which leaves little to be desired. They also have cheap lunchtime specials.

Service is amazing and meals tend to cost about $10.

TAJ MAHAL

722 Brunswick St, New Farm

Taj Mahal has an amazing selection of Indian vegetarian meals, and some of the thickest Naan bread you could chew over for hours. They serve all the traditional Indian meals like Paneer Tikka, Dal, Aloo Mattar Paneer, Channa Masala, and one of the best Vege Korma’s you can get, along with great Mango lassi’s, and amazing deep fried dumplings for dessert. Just a warning – if you’re planning on eating here, go on a day when you don’t plan to drink afterwards, you’ll be too full.

Meals range from $12-15.

TEA MASTER

115 Wickham St, Fortitude Valley

Tea Master, just down the road from Kuan Yin also offers a great selection of mock meats and bento. They have vegan and vegetarian meals along with the bubble teas synonymous with these places. Some of my favourites are the “lamb” curry and vege dumpling soup. Some argue it’s the healthier alternative as they use less gluten, but I guess its all up to personal taste.

Meals are $10 including a drink.

THE FOREST

124 Boundary St West End

One of the most renowned of the vegan restaurants in Brisbane, The Forest have a standard selection of vegetarian staples, including veggie burgers, tofu burgers, bain marie style foods (mostly eastern influenced cuisine) and salads. The best thing about the Forest is the desserts. The cheesecake is y’know, darling, absolutely sublime and all that jazz. Fresh fruit milkshakes and organic beer is also available.  The restaurant also doubles as a venue at times, as you may well have heard if you’re ever in West End on a weekend night.

Meals are usually around $8-10, desserts the standard $6.

BURGER URGE

542 Brunswick St, New Farm

Burger Urge kinda sounds like a meat based restaurant right? They do however offer some vege burgers for those who don’t eat meat/dairy/poultry/etc… They offer a nut free and gluten free burger as well, so if you’re a bit health conscious you can wine/dine here. I think the term for this place is “groumet-ified”. One of the best burgers is the Brie burger if you don’t mind a bit of cheese.

Burgers are about $10, which may seem like a lot, but it’s undoubtedly worth it.

Fundies Organic Cafe

219-223 Given Tce, Paddington

Talk about quality control! Fundies are a sustainable/organic café and supermarket. The menu here offers you a range of meat free, dairy free, gluten free alternatives including quiche, salads, pies, and breakfasts. It’s a real home-style kinda atmosphere, and meals range from $9-15.

Leader Bowl

Sunnybank Plaza, Sunnybank

Another mock meat eaters dream! This is a restaurant amongst many in Sunnybank offering a wide range of Asian based meals. Although it’s a little far away, it does offer some reputable mock and a great deep fried ice-cream. Meals are reasonably priced ($8-10). So if you’ve got a spare day get out to Sunnybank and sample their cuisine.

Mondo Organics

166 Hardgrave Rd, West End

Probably the healthiest and most delicious restaurant offering European style meals. The preparation that goes into these meals is admirable and they take care of every last detail. They have a mixed meat/vegetarian menu, using organic ingredients. Their caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart is awesome. They have one of the best breakfasts in Brisbane, and great desserts. It’s quite expensive so save it for when you take your mum out for breakfast.

Meals around $20 (but completely worth it).
