After releasing their debut album War on Time, ANGELA’S DISH has been touring their asses off, but they’re not heading home just yet. BROOKE MCMASTER catches up with brothers MICHAEL and JOSHUA HARRIS amidst stealing beer and sandwiches from Thirsty Merc’s band room (sorry Mr. Thistlethwayte!).
We’re sitting in the tiniest band room I have ever seen. Not only is it tiny, but it’s cramped. There are beer bottles, there are bodies, the odd lone shoe and the distinct smell of farts waft around the room periodically. The paper thin walls are shaking from the sounds of the stage and I feel as though I’m going to fall over. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
A few weeks ago I spent three days on The Hot Lies tour with these young guns, and it’s safe to say that the boys of Angela’s Dish are completely mental, fun-loving and have left no dick joke go unturned. Having said that though, the quartet are deadly serious about their music and show a level of maturity that extends beyond their years.
The band went through a gruelling process of 15 hour days to see them produce War On Time, an album that showcases a more poised, mellow approach from their past EP releases, though still maintaining those rock undertones to create a fully formed sound. As the key lyricist, Michael came up with the title of the album.
“It’s basically a bit of a piss take on the War on Terror and the basis that time is the sort of thing you can’t defeat and a lot of people wage war on it.”
“I found that a lot of the songs that I had written on the album revolved around that theme – struggling with all this stuff that I had no control over. And I would just like to point out that we thought of it before The Chaser coined it!” Michael laughs.
The song writing team of brothers Michael (Vocals, Guitar) and Joshua (Guitar) may only be in its formative stages, but the young duo have already made it clear that they have the ear and heart for melodies and song structures beyond their years of experience. But like any family there is bound to be some trying moments within the band whilst on the road.
“Yeah it sucks. I hate him.” Josh laughs.
“We have our personal space at home and we go our separate ways when we come off tour, so we have that time apart.” Michael interjects.
“The funny thing is no matter how many times we come home and go our separate ways, you will go down to the pub on a Saturday night and be like ‘Oh hey Pete, hey Scotty, hey Mick’. So even when we try and get away from each other we still end up hanging out. But in the end we like the same things, we do the same things, it’s bound to happen. But it’s never been a problem.” Josh remarks as Michael encapsulates the bands camaraderie.
“But being in the band, it’s like we’re all brothers and it’s a great dynamic”.
ANGELA’S DISH play the JD Set alongside Braindead Lovers & Dardanelles at the Hotel Great Northern Byron Bay Friday 30 & The Tivoli Saturday. War on Time is out now through BNM Records.
