Another feather in Danger Mouse’s already impressive hat
On paper, it’s the greatest team up since peanut butter and jelly; gin and tonic at the least. Just before psychedelic Londoners The Shortwave Set were about to release their second full-length, they received a call from DJ/Producer wunderkind Danger Mouse, offering his assistance. Not wanting to reject King Midas’ touch, the trio pushed the release date back while Danger got to work, also enlisting the arrangement skills of Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks and Velvet Underground maestro John Cale. Surely, such a monumental team-up could never meet expectations, right? Wrong, for Replica Sun Machine combines the talents of each party, minus the overindulgence each has been accused of previously. House Of Lies sounds like a lush retake of John Lennon’s solo work, followed up by the joyous fuzz bass and boy-girl vocals of Now Til ’69. As the album titles suggests, this band has found a way to channel the warmth of the sun into 40 minutes of brilliant pop music.
