Zombie Ghost Train @ GreazeFest PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 31 July 2006
ImageThe trifling matter of death certainly hasn’t stopped rockabilly ghouls ZOMBIE GHOST TRAIN from rocking from beyond the grave. RAVE chats to STU ARKOFF (sore throats and six strings) about the band’s imminent return to this mortal coil for an appearance at this weekend’s celebration of Kustom Kulture, GreazeFest.

You'll be playing at the all-ages Sunday event of GreazeFest – the Hot Rod show, which means lots of kiddies will potentially be corrupted by your undead rockin' from the crypt – how do you feel about that?

I think it’s great – underage people generally get much more into the music and bands than their older counterparts (no offence). Our all-ages shows are always rockin'. As far as corruption goes, Zombie Ghost Train should always be consumed responsibly. I'm more worried about getting up in the daytime!

You played GreazeFest last year as well – what was the highlight of last year's fest for you guys?

Pressing the dead flesh and hangin' out with the living at the Sunday car show.

What do you think is important about an event like this? What's it’s role?

GreazeFest is one of its kind in Oz. It’s an awesome chance for like-minded trash culture freaks to get together and cause trouble. There are so many fringes of music and kulture that get overlooked by the mainstream media – this festival brings all the rockabilly, non-mainstream country, psychobilly music fans, hot-rodders and underground ’50s kulture nuts together. I think it’s brilliant and I'm am glad that there are people like Lori-Lee [festival organiser] and the other festival contributors that are committed to keeping this alive.

A band called the Bone Daddies are playing GreazeFest as well; they look suspiciously like you guys – if you were still alive, of course. Coincidence?

I've heard about these rockabilly impostors! Somebody’s gotta have a day job and let me tell you it's hard putting that fleshtone make-up on. Us zombies like to pretend we are alive once in a while and play barn shakin', show-stoppin’ rockabilly, as we did before we died all those years ago.

It's been about a year since your debut album Glad Rags & Body Bags was released, what have you been doing since then?

We have been touring a lot to support the album. Last September we went on tour to the USA playing 20 shows in 25 days, it was wild. We have also been busy organising overseas releases for the album – we have a label in the US, Hairball 8, and the album is about to be released in Europe thru Fiendforce Records. Currently we are working on a filmclip for R.I.P. from the album, which will be released in late August supported by an east coast tour. We are also in the middle of planning our return trip to the US in November and our first-ever European tour in December!

What bands influenced you when you started, and what attracted you about their music?

The Cramps, Batmobile, Eddie Cochran, The Misfits, The Stray Cats. There is so much passion and raw energy in rockabilly and punk rock. It’s the ultimate expression of white trash rebellion. Fuck the rules, tell it like it is and look damn cool doing it.

Zombie Ghost Train play GreazeFest, Souths Leagues Club, West End, on Sunday, while their “living” incarnation The Bone Daddies play GreazeFest on Friday night. Glad Rags & Body Bags is out now
