Unabashed complexity is given space to breathe

Hardcore lovers of jazz can never pass up the smooth sounds of a stock standard piano, drums and bass trio. Brad Mehldau Trio Live is only the second CD released since 2005, but there’s been no mucking around when it comes to jamming out a solid set. Recorded in a live setting, the album offers more breathing space than the studio alternative, letting ideas fully develop without having the restriction of rushing time. This is part of the magic of the album, master musicians who know how to read each other. The double CD album features five original tunes by Mehldau and a handful of covers, kicking off with Oasis’ Wonderwall. Being one of my favourite songs of all time, I figure this trio are a bit of allright. There are some intricate ideas in amongst the simplicity of the sound, leaving full appreciation to those who care to find it.
