Tunny and Memory Band members convene for Weird Folk Summit

A side project involving musicians from Tunng and The Memory Band is not going to be without its eccentricities and these 13 tracks (including two bonus cuts) certainly strum, drone, clatter and murmur in a manner befitting a maverick-spirited acoustic record. The Accidental’s There Were Wolves is a gently creepy collection of gothic Brit folk reconfigured for the post-Kid A generation – there are discernible lyrics, choruses and fireside acoustic guitars, but there are also stranger sonics and, in tracks like Knock Knock and The Closer I Am, a feeling that comes closer to hypnotic mantra than conventional song. Sam Genders’ lyrics further add to the air of mystery and surrealism – There are wolves hiding in the woods and they can smell blood on the summer air, Carved from the jaw of a whale, cold white warm violin in your arms. It’s one of several records that have emerged in recent years, that prove acoustic music needn’t exclusively be the domain of earnest singer/songwriter types. Experimentalists and sonic visionaries can clearly have unplugged fun, too!
