A lone swordsmen
British DJ Andrew Weatherall is a man of many faces – though he was present at the birth of acid house and is revered as an electronic producer and one half of Two Lone Swordemen, he also has a taste for old school, dirty rock & roll, as evidenced on his rockabilly themed Sci-Fi Lo-Fi compilation on the Soma label last year. Weatherall’s newest compilation, the latest entry in the Watch The Ride series, is a loud, dirty, rollicking monster of a mix, reconciling Weatherall’s these two sides sides to pretty outstanding effect. The mix begins in filthy, beat-driven rock territory, with tracks from Roy Montgomery (London Is Swinging By His Neck) and The Black Lips (Weatherall’s own dub of Veni Vidi Vici); the next stop is demented disco-not-disco, courtesy of Cosmo Vitelli (Converted) and Mock & Toof (Beat Up). At this point, the mix swerves in more of a goth direction; ghoulish punk funkers Padded Cell (Far Beneath London) appear, as does original goth Siouxsie Sioux (Into A Swan, yet another Weatherall dub). Simian Mobile Disco’s spaced-out State Of Things follows, as the mix moves towards its bleepy, melodic conclusion with indie pop from Au Revoir Simone (Sad Song) and The Oscillation (Saturn Five). Like a great, drunken night out at a chilly London indie club, Weatherall’s latest mix is noisy, bizarre, unpredictable and thrilling.
