Promising folksters make their debut
This is a good effort from the local two-piece. The three tracks on offer here are very polished, sweet folk songs. Their sound is simple and organic, not trying to do too much but what they do they get right. Kane Mazlin's vocals have good emotional range and suits the arrangements to a tee, the occasional flourish of strings combining to great dramatic effect. Santa Barbara is well written and solidly arranged, the simplicity of the track making it particularly focused and intense.
Plastic People is a good track but sounds too much like Triple J fodder and doesn't play to Mapletons’ strengths as much as the tracks either side of it. Same People is very good, the opening riff of which sounds like a nihilistic Cobain strum. It’s the memorable refrain of this track that is highly effective; Mazlin singing at the edge of his voice with the strings contributing a tangible poignancy. Mapletons have displayed their talent with this EP and are off to quite a good start.
