(Defected/Stomp)
London-based house duo makes their voices heard
Sam Holt and Gavin Mills have been together as Copyright for years, and have finally released their debut artist album, stacked with a remix disc. If you’re familiar with these guys then you know the score; Balearic house, complete with sanded-back tribal edges and lots of soul (read: lots of diva vocals). Sure, they’re staying true to a time-honoured genre, but it doesn’t mean they can’t innovate – and aside from a few quirky plucks, I can’t find anything interesting enough that would set this album apart from anything else on Defected. Note a male and female vocal together on the same track does not constitute innovation. The album is at least friendly to the listener throughout, and if you heard a track like Voodoo in a club, it would be hard not to have a little fun. But seriously; just because Ibiza is in a musical vacuum, doesn’t mean we have to be.
