Desperate Indie Kids

ImageIn a move seemingly imitating Little Red’s appearance on Neighbours, Canadian angular pop hipsters Tokyo Police Club (pictured, otherwise known as the-band-not-quite-as-good-as-Born-Ruffians) are bizarrely set to appear on American ‘dramedy’ Desperate Housewives. The guest appearance coincides with a plot involving a battle of the bands, and reportedly a Police Clubber may have a ‘close encounter’ with Eva Longoria, which brings to mind The Graduate for some reason…

Gig Review

Meshuggah / Alchemist

Image

The Arena - Sun Oct 12

If Canberra’s psychedelic metal quartet Alchemist prove anything, it’s that the potential to rehash, splice, and implode the values of old styles to create entirely new hybrids is endless. They so expertly craft songs with acid rock, prog, world music, and classical metal styling that they deserve all the accolades they get for their ingenuity.

While I’m more than used to being among fans who treat seeing their most endeared international band as their own personal birthday, as ravenous fans throw beer cups at Meshuggah, its genuinely perverse that the objects can penetrate the experimental death metal quintet’s barricade of sound, or express the crowds’ wild euphoria. Although I’d nearly given the prize for the most tightly rendered playing as going to the heavy metal outfits passing through the city, the musical kinetics on the Swedes’ tracks like Rational Gaze and Straws Pulled At Random argue a renewed place for extreme bands. This is the first time Brisbane fans have seen the head jolting of the quintet, and that their movement follows five separate levels of timing. Drummer Tomas Haake’s immeasurable contributions to the fierce playing of guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Marten Hagstrom, in coordination with Dick Lövgren’s bass, quantifies as the mass balancing Jens Kidman’s exceptional vocal abilities.

Album Review

REX THE DOG – The Rex The Dog Show

Image(Hundehaus)

Elusive DJ combines old and new on first album release

Rex The Dog began his career releasing singles on Berlin-based minimal label Kompakt, but he proved far too big to contain, and before long, he was on dance floors worldwide thanks to his remix of The Knife’s Heartbeats, welding electro beats on to the Swedish duo’s swooning indie dance anthem. The Rex The Dog Show isn’t a debut album so much as a collection of previously-released singles padded out with a few new tracks, but it gives a good overview of Rex’s skill for creating immediate, banging house and electro tracks with enough going on beneath the surface to sustain a longer-term interest. There is a lot of great stuff here – the 80s inspired Bubblicious, which makes liberal use of an Alison Moyet sample, is an exquisite piece of neon-lit, late-night-city-driving techno, while Prototype recalls the synth-driven filter house of Mylo and Linus Loves. Even the shorter, transitional tracks like Italian Skyline and Heartsong have something interesting going on.  The album also includes two remixes – the aforementioned Heartbeats, and Tony The Beat, from The Sounds, another Swedish group, The Sounds. While the artistic merit of including other people’s songs on your album is questionable, if you’re able to let such concerns go, these two vocal-heavy tracks make for a rewarding enough vocal interlude. Perhaps the inclusion of these tracks underscores the point that this is less of a debut than a thrown-together collection of solid house tracks, and in this sense, it works really well.
