(Independent)
Comes with what it says on the cover
There must be a tongue-twister in this somewhere – when a band called Songs sings songs on the Songs EP. Saddled with an oh-so-clever band name, this EP delivers a pleasant splash of indie pop. KC’s In Trouble is efficient and sunny guitar pop with a distinctly Velvet Underground feel, a trend that continues on with Keeping It Clean, and the combined male and female vocals carry a nice chemistry. Running For The Door kicks along a solid riff backed up by a catchy refrain. The keyboards of B To B are sufficiently twee and in fact the EP as a whole comes across as rather playful and light-hearted, but fortunately it isn’t cheerful to the point of excess, some dark and sardonic moments appearing in the slightly Morrison-esque vocals. It comes it at a brisk twelve minutes over four songs and each track is solid, if somewhat unmemorable after first listen. However I get the impression that while it may take time for the claws to sink in, once they have it will be hard to shake them off.
