ImageWollongong’s “poster boys of the independent underground” OHANA.

It’s been a while since you put the Untitled Demo up on your MySpace. You said at the time that it was going to herald the band’s new direction – has that happened?

That was the first song we wrote for the new album, and we did continually look back to it whilst working through the rest of the material. At the same time, we didn’t quite get to emulate it in the way I thought we might, because it’s a bit of a pop song (for us) and those kinds of songs either happen or they don’t (for us) – they can’t be pushed out.

You’re doing a split 7-inch with our own To the North before you release your sophomore album – what was the idea behind the scheduling?

The timing of this tour is nice because we’re able to drum up a bit of interest in the album at the same time as playing with our buddies, but it just happened that way because we want to cram as much in this year as possible. The 7-inch song was recorded in a living room while we were demoing album songs, and the album songs were recorded after that at Head Gap in Melbourne.

What time period in Ohana’s development does Bleed Ideals (off the 7-inch) represent?

Bleed Ideals is the one song we wrote between Weak Wrists and new album material... So it makes sense that it encompasses aspects of both sounds.

It seems (especially in Brisbane) that certain bands exist within small circles – only playing with a few other bands, playing the same venues to the same crowds, and so on. What's your take on this?

I think it’s really hard for people to break out of habits in terms of their music because there aren’t that many different avenues to explore in Australia cities due to the size factor – it's not like there are that many options in the first place. But at the same time, in my opinion the part of the Brisbane music community that we get to interact with is the healthiest and most productive in Australia.

OHANA play Fat Louie’s with Ryu Vs Ken July 4, and Via Studios on the afternoon of July 5, with Nikko. The 7-inch is out sometime this month, while the album drops in September.
